A measured guide
to attending the Perahera.

The Kandy Esala Perahera is a religious ceremony walked for devotees, not for tourists. The city welcomes visitors with great hospitality; in return, the ceremony asks for a particular kind of attention. What follows is a short guide — when to arrive, where to stand, and the quiet conduct the occasion expects of its witnesses.

Vantage Points

Where to Stand

The procession walks the same route each night — out from the Maligawa along Dalada Veediya and back via Raja Veediya and the lake. There are four established vantage-point categories, each with its own character.

01

Dalada Veediya (temple frontage)

High demand

The street directly outside the Maligawa is the finest view, and the hardest to secure. Tiered seating is sold by licensed vendors from July; independent stools are rarely possible here. Arrive four hours before the procession commences.

02

Queens Hotel Corner

Medium demand

The corner opposite the Queen's Hotel offers a broad view of the procession as it turns onto Dalada Veediya. Limited licensed stool-seats; some hotel-bookable balcony seating available to guests.

03

Kandy City Centre flyover

Medium demand

The pedestrian flyover near the Kandy City Centre mall offers an elevated view of the procession's full length. Free to stand; fills three hours before.

04

Lake-side, Devon Walk

Low demand

A quieter stretch along the southern shore of the lake. The procession here is loose and slow; the view is open, and the crowd is thinner. Good for a first-time spectator.

Etiquette

The Conduct the Occasion Asks For

  1. 01

    Dress modestly

White or light-coloured clothing is customary. Cover shoulders and knees. Remove footwear if entering any temple precinct.

  2. 02

    Stand for the Karanduva

The casket of the Tooth Relic passes at the centre of the procession, behind the Maligawa Tusker. Stand; remain still; photography without flash is acceptable.

  3. 03

    No photographs with the Buddha

Inside the Maligawa, do not pose with or turn your back on the Buddha images. Photography is permitted but modest.

  4. 04

    Silence during the drums

The hewisi drums are not a soundtrack. They are the ceremony. Refrain from conversation during the drumming of the Maligawa Perahera.

  5. 05

    No emoji, no whooping

The Perahera is a religious rite. Crowds may be large but the register is quiet. Applause, cheering, and whooping are out of place.

Travel

Getting to Kandy

Kandy sits at 500 metres' elevation, 115 kilometres east of Colombo, in the central hill country. It can be reached by train, road, or private driver from Colombo or Bandaranaike International Airport.

From Colombo (train)
The Podi Menike and Udarata Menike services run from Colombo Fort to Kandy (Peradeniya) in about 3 hours. Reserve observation-saloon seats a month in advance during Esala.
From Colombo (road)
The Southern Expressway reaches Peliyagoda; the Kandy leg is two-lane A-road. Allow 4–5 hours by private car or coach during Esala week.
From Bandaranaike Airport (CMB)
Direct taxi or private coach to Kandy, ~4 hours. A driver is the most reliable option for late-arriving international flights.
Lodging
Book accommodation in Kandy at least six months in advance for Perahera week. The Queen's Hotel, Mahaweli Reach, Amaya Hills, and Earl's Regency are the most established options for international visitors.
